The past decade has seen a slow migration to the former warehouse/industrial district known as Red Hook, the area from the East River to the Brooklyn-Queens expressway, with Atlantic Avenue to the north.
One of New York's oldest port districts—it was the inspiration for "On the Waterfront,"—the views of the Statue of Liberty and Lower Manhattan can't be beat, and additions like IKEA (with its free water shuttle to Manhattan) and Fairway grocery have added convenience to its frontier vibe.
A growing artist community brought new cafes, bakeries, bars and a small "restaurant row" on Van Brunt Street to the area, and well-appointed condos—some new, some in lovely converted townhouses—soon followed, making this a neighborhood in the midst of real change despite its storied past. Fifty-eight-acre Red Hook park, with its green lawns, softball fields, handball courts, a football field and the now-famous food vendors in the warmer months, provide plenty of outdoor life in the neighborhood. The popular restaurants, shops and flea markets of Carroll Gardens, Boerum and Cobble Hill lie just across the Gowanus Expressway.
It's a bit of a walk to the F and G subways that serve the area, but there's a water taxi service to Manhattan and easy access to the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel by car.
