Kensington has become a "sweet spot" for residents who want an urban, yet calm and family-friendly Brooklyn experience without the high-roller prices of Cobble Hill, Park Slope or other classic "brownstone Brooklyn" neighborhoods.
It is poised to become one of Brooklyn's most up-and-coming neighborhoods. Called a "Best-Value Neighborhood" in an article by the New York Daily News, it remains, for the moment, relatively affordable.
You get a lot for your money here. The wide, elegant stretch of Ocean Parkway gives the neighborhood an old-world feeling. Homes along this strip were built in the 1920s through '50s, and many have elegant marble lobbies and solid pre-war construction. Kensington attracts younger home buyers who want to live in a neighborhood with easy access to Manhattan, but more friendly and residential—there are many spacious and comfortable row houses along its shady streets—than some more affordable options.
Kensington is incredibly culturally diverse: the dining choices in this neighborhood are as diverse as its residents.
Within or near the borders of Kensington are everything from Prospect Park, the northern border of the vast Green-wood Cemetery, family-run grocery and chain drug stores, the beautifully renovated Victorian homes of nearby Midwood '>Ditmas Park and multiple F subway stops.
