Though the boundaries of this loosely-defined neighborhood may vary according to residents and historians, this central area south of Midwood '>Ditmas Park and north of Midwood—bordered by Ocean Avenue to the west and Nostrand Avenue to the east—is, like many in the borough, a neighborhood in flux.
Current residents include a diverse population, students at nearby Brooklyn College and new residents from Manhattan and elsewhere in the borough who have moved here for the large Victorian homes around the area known as South Midwood, some with back gardens as big as you'd find in the suburbs. The blocks of historic homes and new restaurants of Ditmas Park are neighbors as well. The vast green spaces of Prospect Park are a terrific addition to life here—the neighborhood abuts the park's southeastern corner. The 585-acre Frederick Law Olmstead-designed park is home to green lawns, lakes, a tennis center and seemingly endless recreation opportunities. On the commercial strips of Flatbush, Church and Nostrand Avenues you'll find a lively mix of Caribbean, Soul food, Chinese, Mexican and South Asian restaurants, and chain stores like Target, Old Navy and Starbucks offer convenience as well as diversity.
The 2, 5, B, and Q subways serve the area, making it a quick trip to Manhattan, Downtown Brooklyn or points west.
