DUMBO (short for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) is the waterfront neighborhood that was one of the first to experience the vast transformation seen by many of the borough's neighborhoods in the late 20th century and the beginning of the 21st.
Formerly a district of vast warehouses and lofts, the neighborhood became home to established artists, craftspeople and furniture dealers seeking more space amid climbing Manhattan costs. DUMBO, with its breathtaking views of both the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges and the Manhattan skyline, quickly became a coveted residential community. Its many lofts have been converted to luxury condos and apartments, and an ever-expanding collection of galleries, restaurants, cafes, upscale shops and high-end chain stores line its cobblestone streets.
The DUMBO Arts Festival is an annual highlight that brings art lovers to the area for open studios, performances and nightlife, and the stunningly renovated St. Ann's Warehouse is a popular venue for concerts and other cultural events.
Just to the north is the tiny neighborhood of Vinegar Hill, a quirky, eclectic and relatively quiet district of nineteenth-century houses of varying architectural styles and a handful of laid-back bars and old-time grocery stores along side streets. With the arrival of 100 Gold Street, the area's first "green" condominium, the 21st century move toward environmentally friendly living has made its mark in this neighborhood.
Subways to both areas include the F and A subways and the Water Taxi at Fulton Ferry landing, making it a breeze to commute to downtown Manhattan.
