Canarsie Real Estate

Canarsie

Canarsie is part of the eastern portion of Brooklyn, on Jamaica Bay. The neighborhood gets its name from the Native American tribe that once lived there, the Canarsees.

At its southeast end is Canarsie Pier on Jamaica Bay, a public fishing spot and recreation area. One of the premier fishing spots on Jamaica Bay (along with Cross Bay Bridge) it is part of the Gateway National Park Recreational Area run by the U.S. National Park Service. Canarsie Pier is surrounded by a protected shoreline and salt marshes. The area has many additional parks including the recently-expanded Canarsie Beach/Seaview Park.

Though the area saw some troubled times in the early 1990s when tensions and crime were higher, the neighborhood is now a stable community with a diverse population. Block parties are popular summer entertainment for residents and guests, including a recent influx of young families, as celebrations spill out onto Canarsie Pier. The area's Kings Plaza shopping center is a convenient retail destination, offering department stores like Macy's and popular smaller specialty stores like Old Navy and Victoria's Secret.

Among its many old churches and synagogues, Canarsie has many one- and two-family homes and a number of large apartment buildings. The area is served by the L subway at Rockaway Parkway station.
