Located on the North Shore of Long Island, the town of Stony Brook is home to 13,727 people. Technically considered a part of adjoining Brookhaven, Stony Brook is also called Stony Brook Village. It is most famously home to the State University of New York Stony Brook.
Ward Melville, a prominent businessman, helped create Stony Brook and two other similar villages, Setauket and Old Field. Melville founded the "Three Village Central School District" for the residents of these hamlets, which is still active today.
Numerous famous people were born and raised in Stonybrook, including the comedian Kevin James, the actor Cliff Robertson, and New Yorker cartoonist George Booth.
Tourist and historical attractions in Stony Brook include the Long Island Museum of American Art, History, and Carriages as well as the Stony Brook Grist Mill. For lovers of historical church architecture, a stop at the St. James Chapel is a must.
Melville founded these hamlets with the idea of creating the "perfect New England village," and his work is evident even today. Stony Brook combines the idyllic nature of these past villages while offering residents all of today's modern conveniences.
