Shelter Island is a town at the far eastern end of Long Island, separated from the rest of Suffolk County by water. Nestled between the island’s North and South Forks, Shelter Island is accessible only by ferry.
More than a third of the island consists of complete wilderness on protected wetlands and nature preserve marshlands owned by The Nature Conservancy. The Mashomack Preserve encompasses more than 2,000 acres. Formerly hunting club territory, the Nature Conservancy purchased it in1980 and has protected its woodlands, marshes, freshwater ponds, and tidal creeks ever since. Hikers can find osprey, ibis, hummingbirds, muskrats, foxes, harbor seals, and terrapins and enjoy four nature and bird-watching trails as well as a barrier-free Braille trail for the visually impaired.
Visitors are often at a loss for words to describe the beauty of Shelter Island. Though there are a few excellent restaurants (including Andre Balasz’s celebrity-studded Sunset Beach), seasonal cultural events, pubs and hotels for visitors, these amenities pale in comparison to the breathtaking views of the ocean and wilderness that are the backyards of grand historic homes and charming seaside cottages.
Many current Shelter Island residents have family roots that go back to island families of the American Revolution, and some summer residents are fifth generation visitors. There are four public beaches and a beach club, and the island is a favorite stop for yachters; The Yacht Club still remains a social center for summer families. Shelter Island also has a private and public golf course.
Very little changes with time on this barely-developed island. The only town-like area is around Shelter Island Heights on the island’s northwest corner. Around the Heights you’ll find gingerbread-house Victorians, Southern Colonials, modern architect-designed homes and quaint antique cottages belonging to the island’s lucky residents.
From Greenport, take the Shelter Island ferry, or from Noyac or Sag Harbor on the South Fork, follow signs to the Shelter Island ferry in North Haven. Both ferries run several times an hour from 6 a.m. to midnight. Cars and trucks are allowed on the ferry.
