Township of Islip Real Estate

The town of Islip is in southern Suffolk County on the South Shore of Long Island and contains part of Fire Island and the Great South Bay. Its central Long Island location affords easy access from major highways, and MacArthur Airport is the only airport in Suffolk or Nassau County with scheduled service on major airlines, serving over two million passengers a year.

Islip and its villages and hamlets are considered by many to be ideal for family life. Central Islip boasts new condos and a newly-minted shopping complex. Cedar Street in the “Old Town” section of Islip as well as East and West Islip and Lindenhurst are more small-town than suburb-and-subdivision.

Residents enjoy a diverse population, proximity to beaches, an easy commute to New York City and a wide variety of housing options. Lindenhurst is popular among young professionals, and Brentwood is home to campuses of the Suffolk Community College and Long Island University. The Hauppauge Industrial Park is one of the largest business complexes on Long Island, with over 1,300 companies employing Long Island residents.

Islip Terrace offers the Connetquot River State Park Preserve, and East Islip, formerly an enclave of south shore mansions—and once the home of the township’s namesake, Islip Grange—is now home to Heckscher State Park, with beaches, playing fields, recreation programs, hiking and biking, fishing, cross-country skiing and more.

The quiet seaside resort of Ocean Beach is considered the hub of western Fire Island. Just an hour from Manhattan, it remains one of Long Island’s most popular getaway spots.

Picturesque historic homes mingle with beaches that rank among the world’s finest. Warm ocean currents make the water inviting early in the summer and long into the fall. Activities include walking to small shops, ice cream parlors and relatively uncrowded beaches. Ocean Beach also offers plenty of options for restaurants and nightlife for a younger set of vacationers that enjoy the Fire Island scene each summer.

The Islip Train Station on the Montauk branch of the Long Island Railroad serves the community with hourly service west to New York City and east to the Hamptons. For travel to Fire Island, there are two major ferry landings at Bay Shore and Sayville.
