The town of Babylon is in southwestern Suffolk County on the South Shore of Long Island bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Nassau County is just to the east.
South Shore communities are built along protected wetlands and white sand beaches fronting on the Atlantic Ocean and Outer Barrier Islands. Babylon is part of the Great South Bay, with Jones Beach Island and Fire Island on the southern perimeter of the town.
Communities like Massapequa, Amityville and Babylon offer suburban bedroom-community living with a small-town, “Main Street U.S.A.” feel. Plenty of restaurants, shops, seasonal celebrations—like the Amityville Apple Festival in October—and art and crafts events can be found here. In some areas, large historic homes line tree-shaded streets. There are private beaches for residents that offer swimming lessons, archery and sailing for kids as well as yacht and sailing clubs for the entire family.
The area is a popular stop on the way to the well-known resort area on the barrier beaches of Fire Island, bringing summer crowds to boost local businesses. Also within the town's borders are the small, remote beach communities on the islands of Gilgo, Oak Beach and Captree which lie on some of the most beautiful oceanfront land in the U.S, and on which there are a handful of summer residences. Robert Moses State Park along 5 miles of the open Atlantic Ocean on Fire Island's western end is Long Island's oldest state park.
Fire Island vacations are the stuff of East Coast legend. Uninterrupted stretches of beach, undisturbed ocean views and seemingly endless dining and nightlife draw New York City folk every summer.
Babylon is served by the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) via the Babylon branch as well as major highways with bus service available via the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA).
